ABOUT THE GAME
Title: I translated the game 字字惊心 to Words of Terror because the Chinese version of title implies that in the game, every word you step on will impact the game, so it has to be treated with great caution
Genre: the game is a top-down PVP game, in which players battle against one another in a map composed of Chinese characters (each character occupies one grid on the map)
Background story: originally (version 1, 1V1 game), this is a game played by two deskmates during a boring Math class; in version 2 (3-player game), the girl who sits in front of them joins the game
CORE MECHANICS
All players start with no attacks and low health, so everyone should look for and become a character as soon as possible in order to deal damage
Rules
Here is an approximate English version of how the game mechanics work. Given the rule below, “assassin high damage,” in order to become this assassin character, the player must step from the top-left “A,” all the way to top-right “N” to change appearance to the assassin character, then all the way to the bottom-left “E” so as to deal high damage with this character.
To make the game more entertaining and fair, we simulate the movement in Crypt of the Necrodancer, where the player-controlled avatar steps, one square unit at a time, along the beat of the music. The avatar will automatically step forward, unless the player manually changes direction
The longer a rule is and the more turns it has, the more powerful the character/ability it describes is
For more details about the rules in our map, see “Maps & Translation” below
Special terrains
All special terrains are also marked using Chinese characters. Different terrains have different effect one different characters. For more details, see “Maps & Translation” below
We want to simulate the basic strategy of Go, where the player whose pieces occupy greater area on the map is more powerful. The player is encouraged to switch to a character that increases the area of certain terrain, and then switch to a character that is buffed when in that terrain
BASIC GAME RULES
At the beginning of the game, everyone is a non-character who cannot attack (so any special attack abilities or attack buffs are useless)
Players should activate attack by switching to a character (as described on the map)
All non-characters lose health points when entering special terrains
When switching characters, the ratio of current health to maximum health is the same
The last person standing wins
